4 Tips to Help You Think More Clearly During a Stressful Work Situation

Stressful moments at work happen to everyone. There simply is no way to avoid them all of the time. Although you may not be able to control what happens, you can control how you react to it. Finding constructive ways to work through the events can help you resolve them and move forward.

Choose among these four tips to help yourself stay calm and think clearly when you get stressed at work.

1. Write Down Talking Points

If you need to have a difficult conversation with someone, make a list of the main topics you want to cover. This way, you can share everything that you want to say. Be sure you practice your side of the conversation before meeting with the person. Include small talk at the beginning to ease into the discussion. Also, pay close attention to the other person’s responses. Additionally, ask questions for further clarification when needed. Plus, consider taking notes on what was said for later reference.

2. Take Deep Breaths

If you feel a situation is increasing your stress level beyond your limit, stop what you are doing and focus on your breathing. Sit in a chair with your hands in your lap and your feet on the floor. Next, close your eyes and imagine yourself in a relaxing place. It may be on a beach, at a spa, or at another location that provides you peace. Then, slowly and deeply inhale and exhale for 5-10 minutes. When you feel calm, open your eyes.

3. List Solutions to a Problem

If you feel stressed about an issue that came up, write down how you can resolve it. Then, make a list of each answer’s good and bad points. After that, use the information to come up with the best solution. Next, write down the steps you need to take to attain the resolution. Include what you will do, how you will do it, when it is done, who will be involved, and where it will occur. Finally, work on the solution until the problem is solved.

4. Participate in a Relaxing Activity

If you need a break from an activity that is stressing you out, do something that calms you down. This may include meditation, stretching, or reading. Or, it could involve taking a walk around the office, listening to music, or spending some time outside. Clearing your head can help you relax and feel more in control of the situation.
